Definition Protein-energy malnutrition (PEM) is a potentially fatal body-depletion disorder. It is the leading cause of death in children in developing countries. Description PEM is also referred to as protein-calorie malnutrition.

Protein-energy undernutrition (PEU), previously called protein-energy malnutrition, is an energy deficit due to chronic deficiency of all macronutrients. It commonly includes deficiencies of many micronutrients.

Because the brain is preferentially spared in protein-energy malnutrition (see Protein-Energy Malnutrition), reduced growth in head circumference occurs late and indicates very severe or long-standing malnutrition.
