Pseudogout
Definition
Pseudogout is a joint disease that can cause attacks of arthritis. Like gout, the condition involves the formation of crystals in the joints. But in pseudogout, the crystals are formed from a salt instead of uric acid.

What is pseudogout?
Pseudogout (say: 'soo-doh-gowt') is a type of arthritis. It is sometimes called calcium pyrophosphate (say: 'pie-row-foss-fate') dihydrate crystal deposition disease.

Pseudogout is a form of arthritis that develops in people with calcium pyrophosphate crystal deposition disease. It is caused by the buildup of calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate (CPPD) crystals within a joint.

Pseudogout is a form of arthritis triggered by deposits of calcium crystals (calcium pyrophosphate dehydrate) in the joints. It is also called calcium pyrophosphate deposition disease (CPPD).

Pseudogout is most common in elderly individuals and is more common in males than in females. The risk of pseudogout is increased in individuals who have joint problems from other conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis.

Pseudogout is a medical condition that causes symptoms very similar to gout. However, pseudogout occurs when there is too much calcium phosphate in the blood, not uric acid.

Pseudogout is sometimes confused with gout because it produces similar symptoms of inflammation. However, in this condition, also called chondrocalcinosis, deposits are made up of calcium phosphate crystals, not uric acid.

Pseudogout is similar to gout. In this condition, calcium deposits in one or more of your joints, causing pain, redness, and swelling.

Similar to and deriving its name from gout, pseudogout is a joint disease caused by inflammation from an accumulation of crystals in the synovial fluid around the joint.

In gout, the crystal is uric acid.
In pseudogout/chondrocalcinosis/calcium pyrophosphate deposition disease, the crystal is calcium pyrophosphate.
Diabetic arthropathy (M14.2, E10-E14) is caused by diabetes.

People with certain diseases such as gout and pseudogout can develop bursitis from crystal deposits. When these crystals form in a bursa, they cause inflammation leading to bursitis.

CPPDD, also called chondrocalcinosis or pseudogout, is characterized by the accumulation of calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate crystals in the cartilage of joints. The buildup of these crystals weakens cartilage and causes it to break down more easily.

Systemic causes of arthralgia include osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia, crystal-induced arthritis (gout or pseudogout), polymyalgia, systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatic fever, sickle cell disease, or rheumatoid arthritis.
