Definition of medical terminology for Venipunctures.

 


Cuts or punctures from sharp objects. Wear puncture-resistant, reinforced-sole footwear and shin guards.

FOR MINOR PUNCTURES
Wash your hands with soap or antibacterial cleanser to prevent infection.
Use a stream of water for at least 5 minutes to rinse the puncture wound, then wash with soap.
Look (but do NOT probe) for objects inside the wound.

While cuts and punctures of the skin are the most frequent means of contracting cellulitis, other conditions may also cause this infection. People who have athlete's foot, leading to dry cracked skin, are at risk.

Repeated lumbar punctures or ventricular shunting may be used to relieve high cerebrospinal fluid pressures or increased cerebrospinal fluid within the ventricles of the brain (hydrocephalus).

Small wounds and punctures are usually not a problem for hemophiliacs and can be treated as in a nonhemophiliac. Uncontrolled internal bleeding, however, can result in pain and swelling and permanent damage, especially to joints and muscles.

While these various balloon strategies may reduce procedure time, the currently available prototypes require transseptal punctures with an outer sheath size of 14 to 20 French.

Spinal Taps (Lumbar Punctures, LPs)
The brain and spinal cord is surrounded by fluid called cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). This fluid is made by the brain itself and serves to protect it from sharp impacts.

In all other patients, avoid multiple venipunctures in the same area.
Choose a large, intact vein with good blood flow for the venipuncture and placement of the cannula. Do not choose inadvertently "dislodgeable" veins (e.g.

Other reasons to do lumbar punctures include: to remove fluid and relieve pressure with certain types of headaches, to look for other diseases in the central nervous system, or to place chemotherapy medications into the spinal fluid.

Ambulatory phlebectomy involves the removal of the vein by tiny punctures or incisions along the path of the enlarged vein. Through these tiny holes, the surgeon uses a surgical hook to remove the varicose vein.

By passing a needle into the disc fluids, drugs or blood products may be administered without concern to find an adequate vein, making multiple venipunctures, or causing leakage into surrounding tissues.
Port-a-cath
A type of infusion port.

Then the doctor uses a special instrument to make a tiny puncture in the skin and stretch the opening so the vas can be cut and tied. This approach produces very little bleeding. The punctures heal quickly by themselves, so no stitches may be needed.
