thick white or yellowish fluid that forms in areas of infection such as wounds and abscesses.

Pus can be white, slightly yellow or green, and is relatively thick, approximately the same as Elmer's Glue. It's actually a collection of dead skin cells, white blood cells called neutrophils, and some bacteria that is still putting up a fight.

Pus forms as a collection of fluid, destroyed tissue cells, white blood cells, and live and dead microorganisms. The pus commonly becomes encapsulated (enclosed) by a lining or membrane that forms around the edges.

Pus is an example of exudate found in infected wounds that also includes bacteria and high concentrations of white blood cells.

Pus collects at the site of the infection and will become progressively more painful until it either ruptures and drains on its own or is drained surgically.

Pus-filled sores may form where your eyelashes come out of your eyelid. They may turn into ulcers (hollow sores).

Pus collects around the tonsil and may spread over the roof of the mouth (the palate) and to the neck, chest and lungs. Symptoms include swelling of the face and neck, problems opening the mouth, fever, and intensely foul smelling breath.

If signs of infection occur, a healthcare professional should be notified. If any bleeding from the wound occurs, gentle pressure can be applied with a clean bandage or gauze.

The buildup of pus within the middle ear causes pain and dampens the vibrations of the eardrum (so there is usually transient hearing loss during the infection). Severe ear infections may cause the eardrum to rupture.

Pus from infected wounds can contain the bacteria. Keeping wounds covered helps prevent spreading it to others. Dirty bandages or tape should be put into a plastic bag and sealed before they are thrown out with the regular trash.

Tuberculosis: TB causes localised areas of inflammation and growth that leads to compression.

In a disease process, the pleural space may fill with fluid, such as blood, pus (from infection), serum, or lymph. Alternately, the pleural fluid may be prevented from being reabsorbed, causing an accumulation of fluid in the pleural space.

Signs/Symptoms: Localized redness, pus, tenderness and/or pain, fever, cough, difficulty urinating. Severe infections may present with a high fever, drop in blood pressure, change in heart or respiratory rate.

If an infection is present, bacteria and sometimes pus will be found in the urine.

A peritonsillar abscess is a collection of pus behind the tonsils that pushes one of the tonsils toward the uvula (the prominent soft tissue dangling from the back of the upper throat.
