Inflammation of the glomerulus (glomerulonephritis) is the result and may present as acute glomerulonephritis, chronic glomerulonephritis or rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis.

Often the precise cause of glomerulonephritis is unknown; however this condition can develop quickly with loss of kidney function occurring over weeks and months, called rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis.
