[50] VHL disease is inherited through an autosomal dominant trait and is characterized by the following: capillary hemangioblastomas of the CNS and retina, clear cell renal carcinoma, pheochromocytoma, pancreatic tumors, and inner ear tumors.

Primary aldosteronism is caused by an adenoma, usually unilateral, of the glomerulosa cells of the adrenal cortex or, more rarely, by adrenal carcinoma or hyperplasia.

Also, the cells that make up a renal carcinoma may be clear, granular, mixed clear and granular or sarcomatoid or spindle type.

Another anti-angiogenic drug approved by the FDA to treat colon, lung, and breast cancer, bevacizumab (Avastin), has been shown to slow tumor growth for people with metastatic renal carcinoma.

Infancy can be a critical period because of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), omphalocele (when present), and an increased rate of tumor development. Wilm's tumor and adrenal carcinoma are the most common tumor's in patients with this syndrome.

In rare cases, adrenal virilism is caused by an adrenal gland tumor. The tumor can be benign (adrenal adenoma) or cancerous (adrenal carcinoma). Sometimes virilism is caused by a type of tumor on a woman's ovary (arrhenoblastoma).

In women the main age of presentations is between 20 and 40.
Ectopic ACTH production affects males ten times more often than females.
Adrenal carcinoma is most xommon in the fourth and fifth decades.
