Renal dialysis is a mechanical method of removing waste products and excess fluid from the blood when the kidneys are unable to do so (renal failure). The two forms of dialysis are hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis.

In renal dialysis, the patient must be connected to a machine that mechanically filters the blood. Dialysis does not treat renal failure, but instead keeps a person alive by performing the crucial functions of the kidneys.
