Intrauterine fetal blood transfusion for Rh disease
Treatment Overview
An intrauterine transfusion provides blood to an Rh-positive fetus when fetal red blood cells are being destroyed by Rh antibodies.

Rh disease is a cause for immune mediated hydrops fetalis; however, owing to preventative methods developed in the 1970s Rh disease has markedly declined.

Immune hydrops may develop because of Rh disease in the mother. When an Rh negative mother has an Rh positive baby, the mother's immune system sees the baby's Rh positive red blood cells as "foreign.

Also called Rh disease or erythroblastosis, hemolytic disease results when a woman who is Rh-negative (meaning she does not carry the Rh protein in her blood) has a fetus who is Rh-positive and her immune system makes antibodies against the fetus's ...

Though complications with Rh incompatibility are rare, the development of Rh disease can be dangerous for a developing fetus and newborn, posing a risk for jaundice, anemia, brain damage, and even death.

Hemolytic disease of the newborn, or RH disease, was first identified in 1932 at Children’s Hospital Boston by Dr. Louis Diamond. He went on to develop the first successful treatment, a transfusion procedure, in the 1940s.

Caused by massive breakdown of red blood cells.
Rh disease and blood group incompatibility are two possible causes.
This type of jaundice will occur within the first 24 hours of life, before the baby leaves the hospital, and can be harmful.

An amniocentesis may be performed in late pregnancy to check fetal well-being and diagnose fetal conditions, such as Rh disease (complications resulting from incompatibility between the blood types of the mother and baby) and infection.

In more than 98% of cases, red blood cell incompatibility between a mother and the baby she is carrying involves the Rhesus or Rh D antigen so the disease is known as Rhesus disease , Rh disease or Rh Incompatibility .
