How is ringworm affecting the scalp treated?
The most common treatment is an antifungal medicine taken by mouth. If a large kerion has formed, the antifungal treatment may be supplemented with corticosteroids for a short period of time.

What is ringworm?

Ringworm of the body is one of several forms of ringworm, a fungal infection that develops on the top layer of your skin. Ringworm on the body is usually found on the face or neck, but can be anywhere on the body.

Ringworm of the nails (tinea unguium) also known as tinea unguium is not as common as the other types of ringworm. This type of ringworm develops at the tip of the toenail, gradually becoming thicker and discolored.

How is ringworm diagnosed?
Sometimes, the diagnosis of ringworm is obvious from its location and appearance.

What Is Ringworm?
Worms don't cause ringworm. Rather, this superficial skin infection, also known as tinea, is caused by fungi called dermatophytes.

Ringworm is not, as the name implies, an infection caused by worms. Rather it is a fungal infection of the skin that can occur in various places—on the head, under the arms, in the groin area, and on the feet.

Ringworm is contagious. It can be passed from one person to another by direct skin contact or by contaminated objects such as unwashed clothing or combs. Dog and cats can also have the fungus and spread the infection.

Ringworm of the body (tinea circinata) is quickly cured by the applica tion of a strong irritant. I am in the habit of painting the ring lightly with glacial acetic acid.

Causes
Ringworm is caused by microscopic skin fungi that live on the outer layer of the skin. You can get ringworm from direct skin-to-skin contact with infected people or pets.

Ringworm of the body (tinea corporis). This form causes a red, scaly ring or circle of rash on the top layer of your skin.
Jock itch (tinea cruris). This form affects your genitals, inner thighs and buttocks.

Ringworm of the beard (face) is more persistent than ringworm of the scalp. Ringworm of the body is the easiest to eliminate.
Dogs, cats, rabbits, children, and contaminated clothing are generally the carriers of the disease.

Ringworm on the scalp may require the use of an oral drug, such as griseofulvin, because creams and lotions applied to the affected area may not get into the hair follicles to kill the fungus.
