Roundworms are a serious health problem in parts of the developing world. Many poorer people do not have access to healthcare so a roundworm infection can quickly become serious.
Roundworms: Most common in children, they bore through the intestinal wall and settle in other organs.
Because of the warmth of the bed, worms tend to come out of the anus. So inspect that area on children after they are asleep.

Roundworms are treated with the herbs Chuan Lian Gen Pi (Cortex meliae radicis) and Bing Lang (Semen arecae) and the patent medicines Wu Mei Wan (Mume Pill) and Qu Hui Wan (Dispel Roundworms Pill).
The roundworms produce other worms that move through the gut wall and into the bloodstream. These organisms tend to invade muscle tissues, including the heart and diaphragm (the breathing muscle under the lungs).
Pinworms, roundworms and tapeworms are examples of helminths. After helminth eggs enter the body, they hatch and live there, usually in the intestines. The diseases they cause are often mild, but sometimes serious.
If only a few roundworms are in the intestines, there may not be any symptoms. If symptoms exist, they are usually mild (vague or sporadic feelings of abdominal pain).
Tissue Nematodes or roundworms:
Trichinella Spiralis -- the cysts of this worm can live in pork and other meats (dog, horse, bear, walrus) that when eaten, can cause serious disease in the host. The disease is called Trichinosis (Tr.).
Trichinosis is caused by Trichinella species (also termed parasitic nematodes, intestinal worms, and roundworms) that initially enter the body when meat containing the Trichinella cysts (roundworm larvae) is eaten.
Pinworms are tiny (one-half-inch), white, threadlike roundworms found primarily in the colon and rectum. They enter the body when pinworm eggs are swallowed. The eggs subsequently hatch in the small intestine.
