Saccular Aneurysm

Disease Russell-Silver syndromeSacral agenesis

Alternate Names : Aneurysm repair - cerebral, Cerebral aneurysm repair, Coiling, Saccular aneurysm repair, Berry aneurysm repair, Fusiform aneurysm repair, Dissecting aneurysm repair, Endovascular aneurysm repair - brain
Definition ...

Saccular aneurysms may occur as a result of a congenital (present at birth) weakness of an artery wall or trauma. Atherosclerosis may also be a factor. Fusiform aneurysms most often occur with fibromuscular dysplasia.

Saccular aneurysm - A round aneurysm that bulges out from an artery. Involves only part of the circumference (outside wall) of the artery.

A saccular aneurysm (berry aneurysm) can vary in size from a few millimeters to over a centimeter. Giant berry aneurysms can reach well over 2 centimeters.

Giant saccular Aneurysm: Weakened, bulging part of an artery , which, if undetected and left untreated, may rupture and cause life-threatening internal bleeding. \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n ');" href="/Home/library/glossaries/aneurysm.

Although a cerebral aneurysm may be present without symptoms, the most common initial symptom of a cerebral saccular aneurysm is a subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH).

The most common form is a small saccular aneurysm called a berry aneurysm. Clusters of berry aneurysms are often noted in the large arteries at the base of the brain but can occur in any area of the brain.

Fusiform: Uniform in shape, appearing equally along an extended section and edges of the aorta.
Saccular aneurysm: Small, lop-sided blister on one side of the aorta that forms in a weakened area of the aorta wall.

They are shaped like a spindle ("fusus" means spindle in Latin) with widening all around the circumference of the aorta. (Saccular aneurysms just involve a portion of the aortic wall with a localized out pocketing).

This is called a dissecting aneurysm because one layer is "dissected" or separated from another. If damage occurs to only the middle (muscular) layer of the vessel, a sack-like bulge can form; therefore, this is a saccular aneurysm.
