What is scabies?
Scabies is an infestation of mites (tiny insects) characterized by small red bumps and intense itching.

Scabies is a contagious, extremely itchy, skin disorder that leads to a rash. It is caused by an infestation with a parasite - the scabies mite. The mite lives on the skin and burrows into it.

Scabies, crusted: A severe form of scabies caused by delayed treatment of the initial infestation, characterized by mite-filled lesions covered with scabs. These lesions often fall victim to secondary infections, as with Staphylococcus bacteria.

Will scabies get better without treatment?
Probably not. Scabies will not usually disappear by itself, it requires treatment.
If it's left untreated, the constant scratching may lead to eczema or other kinds of chronic skin diseases.

How is scabies spread?
Scabies mites are transferred by direct skin-to-skin contact. Indirect transfer from undergarments or bedclothes can occur only if these have been contaminated by infested people immediately beforehand.

How is scabies diagnosed?
A doctor will suspect scabies based on your symptoms. Scabies is especially likely if you have had close contact with other people who have had similar symptoms.

Scabies is usually passed from one person to another through close skin-to-skin contact. It is common for infected parents to pass scabies to their child (particularly an infant) or vice versa as a result of close contact.

Scabies occurs worldwide and affects people of all races and social classes. Scabies can spread rapidly under crowded conditions where close body contact is frequent.

Treatment of Pubic Lice and Scabies:
Get a test from a medical provider if infection is suspected.
Can be killed using medication prescribed by a medical provider or, in the case of pubic lice, over-the-counter products.
