Staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome (SSSS) is a condition of the skin that results from an infection caused by a strain of staphylococcal bacterium.

Scalded Skin Syndrome
Scalded skin syndrome (SSS) most often affects newborns and kids under age 5. The illness usually starts with a localized staph skin infection, but the staph bacteria manufacture a toxin that affects skin all over the body.

Staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome usually progresses in a predictable way. The infection starts out as a small rash, usually around the diaper area or belly button in babies. In an older person, the infection usually starts on the face.
