Scrotal swelling can occur in males at any age. The swelling can be on one or both sides, and there may be pain. The testicles and penis may or may not be involved.

Scrotal swelling

These symptoms can often be confused with an infection of the testicles. An infection should not be diagnosed until torsion is ruled out.

Hydroceles are a common cause of scrotal swelling and may occur on one or both sides.
Hematocele. This type of scrotal mass is generally caused by trauma to the area.

There may be scrotal swelling in boys that is as large as the original hernia. Swelling can last several weeks.
Your child's temperature may be increased for up to 48 hours after surgery.
There may be a small amount of bloody drainage.

Early in the process, there may be no scrotal swelling. However very shortly thereafter, there will be swelling and redness of the scrotal skin. In nearly half of the patients scrotal swelling is found on surgical exploration.

A physical examination confirms the presence of the swollen glands. No testing is usually required.

neck of this balloon runs along a structure in both of the testes called the spermatic cord and opens into the abdomen. Normally, this neck is sealed off before birth. If it fails to close, fluid continues to seep through and cause scrotal swelling.
