Seborrheic dermatitis is an inflammation of the upper layers of skin, characterized by red, itchy skin that sheds scales.

Seborrheic dermatitis is an inflammatory condition that usually occurs in areas of the body that have many oil-producing glands, including the scalp, face, upper chest, and back.

Seborrheic dermatitis is a common, inflammatory skin condition that causes flaky, white to yellowish scales to form on oily areas such as the scalp or inside the ear. It can occur with or without reddened skin.

What is Seborrheic Dermatitis?

Seborrheic dermatitis causes no long-term effects other than itching and discomfort.
What are the risks to others?
Seborrheic dermatitis is not contagious, and poses no risk to others.

The exact cause of seborrheic dermatitis is unknown, though common skin yeast organisms, called Malassezia, may play a role in some persons.

Seborrheic dermatitis (seborrhea) - doctors consider this a type of eczema, although it creates a greasier rash than usual for eczema. This scaly dermatitis commonly appears on the scalp of infants (as cradle cap) or as dandruff in adults.

Seborrheic dermatitis is a rash that appears in patches of redness and scaling around the eyebrows, eyelids, mouth, nose, the trunk, and behind the ears. If it happens on your scalp, it is called dandruff in adults and cradle cap in infants.

Seborrheic dermatitis may be dry or moist and is characterized by greasy scales and yellowish crusts on the scalp, eyelids, face, external surfaces of the ears, under-arms, breasts, and groin. In infants it is called cradle cap.

Seborrheic dermatitis is more common in men than in women and occurs most frequently between the ages of 30 and 60 ("Seborrheic Dermatitis").
Perioral dermatitis is most common in young women ("Perioral Dermatitis").
