Seizures
What is a seizure?
A seizure is a symptom, not a disease. It happens when nerve cells in the brain function abnormally and there is a sudden abnormal electrical signal in the brain. The seizure can cause strange sensations and behavior.

Tonic Seizures
Tonic seizures cause a brief loss of consciousness. The body becomes rigid and the person falls to the ground. There is no subsequent convulsion or clonic phase and the person regains consciousness.

Atonic seizures
During an atonic seizure (also called a drop attack) the muscles in your body relax and you go floppy. You may fall forwards to the ground, which can sometimes cause you to injure yourself.

absence seizures (also called petit mal seizures)
These seizures are characterized by a brief altered state of consciousness and staring episodes. Typically, the person's posture is maintained during the seizure.

Fever seizures (sometimes called fever convulsions) are uncontrolled muscle spasms that can occur in children who have a rapid increase in body temperature. You may not even know your child has a fever.

Febrile seizures don't cause epilepsy. But the chance of epilepsy developing in a child who has had several febrile seizures is slightly higher than if he or she didn't have a febrile seizure.

Absence seizures usually occur only in children and young people. Most people with this type of epilepsy 'grow out of it' by the time they are adults.

Febrile seizures are classified as simple or complex:
Simple febrile seizures. These are the most common. They last from a few seconds to 15 minutes and stop on their own. After the seizure, your child may cry or be quite sleepy.

Seizures can cause sudden LOC but are not considered syncope. However, seizures must be considered in patients presenting for apparent syncope because history may be unclear or unavailable, and some seizures do not cause tonic-clonic convulsions.

Seizures
The cells in the brain, known as neurons, communicate with each other with electrical impulses. During a seizure, the electrical impulses are disrupted, which can cause the brain and body to behave strangely.

In this type of attack, the person briefly loses awareness and stares into space (usually for less than 10 seconds) and makes an immediate recovery. During the attack the patient may blink their eyes.

Seizures are sometimes described as focal, which means that they originate from a specific region of the brain.

Seizures occur when the nerves inside the brain are temporarily changed due to abnormal electrical functioning. Seizures can be mild or severe.
