Septal hematoma of the nose is a swelling or collection of blood, usually clotted blood, that occurs in the wall that separates the nostrils. It can be the result of trauma, bleeding disorders, disease, or drug use.

A large amount of blood in the nasal septum (nasal septal hematoma).

Sometimes, a collection of blood called a septal hematoma may accompany a nose fracture. A septal hematoma can block one or both nostrils within hours of your injury. Septal hematoma requires surgical drainage to prevent cartilage damage.
Complications occurring at the time of fracture include septal hematoma requiring surgical evacuation to prevent infection and tissue necrosis, epistaxis, and leakage of cerebrospinal fluid.
A septal hematoma, which is a collection of blood, can also develop. This may cause pain, pressure, nasal blockage, and infection. If infection occurs and spreads into the sinuses, it can be life threatening.
