Parathyroid gland secretion of PTH can be altered by changes in serum magnesium levels. The decreased serum magnesium levels seen in HSH result in decreased PTH secretion. PTH, in turn, controls the availability of serum calcium.
The reason is that serum magnesium levels (the test most doctors use) do not reflect actual body stores of magnesium. Blood levels are kept within the normal range at the expense of other tissues.
