What is Shwachman-Diamond syndrome?
Shwachman-Diamond syndrome is an inherited condition that affects many parts of the body, particularly the bone marrow, pancreas, and skeletal system.

Shwachman-Diamond syndrome - a rare genetic disorder characterized by pancreatic insufficiency (digestive enzymes are not produced) and low white blood cell count. It also may affect bone growth, lung function and other body systems.

Neutropenia can also result from bone marrow failure due to rare syndromes (eg, cartilage-hair hypoplasia, Chédiak-Higashi syndrome, dyskeratosis congenita, glycogen storage disease type IB, Shwachman-Diamond syndrome).

Researchers are not sure how common Shwachman-Diamond syndrome is; medical researchers estimate that it affects one in every 50,000 births. The disease affects slightly more males than females.
