The tensions of unresolved stress frequently cause insomnia, generally keeping the stressed person awake or causing awakening in the middle of the night or early morning.

Chronic Sleep Disturbance
Sleep disturbances are common in fibromyalgia. Patients with the condition have a higher-than-average rate of a sleep disorder called periodic limb movement disorder (PLMD).

Sleep disturbances occur in about 12% to 25% of the general population [1] and are often associated with situational stress, illness, aging, and drug treatment.[2,3] It is estimated that 45% of people with cancer experience sleep disturbance.

Sleep disturbances are very common in older people. Changes in sleep patterns may be a normal part of aging, but many other factors common in older people contribute to sleep problems.

Sleep disturbances are extremely common especially in places where physical work is minimized but work that demands a lot of mental activity and is very stressful is the norm. Sounds like the U.S. and much of the developed world.
