Snake bites occur when a snake bites the skin, and are medical emergencies if the snake is poisonous.

Snake bites: A bite of a venomous snake, such as a rattlesnake, copperhead, cottonmouth water moccasin, or coral snake. A bite from one of these snakes should be considered a medical emergency. See also: Rattlesnake bite; Snake antivenin.

Snake bites can be deadly if not treated quickly. Children are at higher risk for death or serious complications due to snake bites because of their smaller body size.

How common are foreign snake bites?
Each year, fewer than 10 UK residents are bitten by foreign snakes, either captive ones kept in the country or while they are travelling abroad.

If you hike often, consider buying a snake bite kit (available from hiking supply stores). Do not use older snake bite kits, such as those containing razor blades and suction bulbs.
Don't provoke a snake. That is when many serious snake bites occur.
