Somatization disorder is a long-term (chronic) condition in which a person has physical symptoms that involve more than one part of the body, but no physical cause can be found.

This rare psychological disorder is characterized by a seemingly endless list of physical complaints that do not seem to have a medical cause.

Somatization disorder. This disorder was previously designated Briquet's syndrome . The essential features consist of multiple, recurrent physical complaints made over many years and starting in young adult life or adolescence.

Somatization disorder falls under the classification of somatoform disorders. These disorders are characterized by physical complaints lacking a known physical (organic) basis.

Somatization disorder, formerly called Briquet's syndrome, occurs when patients experience symptoms in many different organ systems that cannot be explained.

Somatization disorder: A person with a somatization disorder has symptoms that mimic or look like those of a disease or injury but for which there is no physical cause or basis.

Some patients have anxiety disorders, depression, or a somatization disorder. Sleep disturbances also coexist. However, stress and emotional conflict do not always coincide with symptom onset and recurrence.

Other more unusual causes of abdominal pain include a type of emotional upset called somatization disorder, reflected as physical discomfort (including recurrent abdominal pain). Strep throat in children can cause abdominal pain.

Conversion disorder differs from other somatoform disorders — such as hypochondria and somatization disorder — in that it affects primarily sensory and motor functions that are normally under voluntary control.

For example, in somatization disorder, conversion disorder, and hypochondria, the individual is convinced that they really suffer from physical symptoms, have a deficit in movement or sensory function, or are seriously ill, respectively.

They find it difficult to control, and the anxiety is associated with at least three symptoms (see symptoms below). The diagnosis may be modified if combined with specific concerns (e.g., social phobias, separation anxiety, somatization disorder).
