A somatoform disorder is a clinical complaint of symptoms made by a patient for which there is no physical exidence of disease. There are five main types of somatoform disorder: 1. Hypochondriasis 2.

What is a somatoform disorder?

Somatoform disorders include conversion disorder, somatisation disorder, hypochondriasis, body dysmorphic disorder and pain disorder.
Somatoform disorders are relatively common but the exact prevalence is difficult to determine.

Somatoform disorders can affect anyone of any age. The exact number of people affected is difficult to determine as many cases are probably not diagnosed. Somatisation disorder is thought to be quite rare, perhaps affecting about 1 in 1,000 people.

The somatoform disorders are a group of mental disturbances placed in a common category in DSM-IV on the basis of their external symptoms.

Overview: Somatoform disorders occur when patients experience physical symptoms that cannot be attributed to a specific disease or disorder.

Somatoform disorders are psychological disorders which are characterized by physical symptoms that have no apparent physical cause. While potentially difficult to diagnose, conversion disorder is readily treatable.

Conversion disorder is one of several types of somatoform disorders, in which signs and symptoms create the appearance of a medical illness that has other no medical explanation.

Factitious disorders are similar to another group of mental disorders called somatoform disorders, which also involve the presence of symptoms that are not due to actual physical or mental illnesses.
