What is Spina Bifida?
Spina Bifida refers to a birth defect resulting in malformations of the spinal cord, caused by the incomplete closure of a vertebral arch during development.
Spina bifida is a type of birth defect. This type is called a neural tube defect. In spina bifida, a baby's spine does not close completely during early pregnancy.
Spina bifida occulta is the least serious type of spina bifida. In this type of spina bifida, the opening in the spine is very small, with a gap in one or more vertebrae (disc-shaped bones of the spine).
Spina bifida is a serious birth defect that causes incomplete development of part of the spinal cord, its covering and the spine. This malformation happens in the womb when your baby is just beginning to develop.
