Stomach ulcers may develop from:
the presence of bacteria called Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), the most common cause of stomach ulcers
decreased resistance of the lining of the stomach to stomach acid
increased production of stomach acid.

Stomach ulcers cannot be healed overnight, but with the correct treatment and lifestyle modifications, a recurrence can be prevented. Over-the-counter drugs such as antacids may be used to treat mild symptoms but are generally not as effective.

Turmeric does not appear to be helpful in treating stomach ulcers, and there is some evidence that it may increase the amount of acid in the stomach, making existing ulcers worse. (See "Precautions" section.)

Stomach ulcers are sores that form in the lining of the stomach. Ulcers are rare in children and uncommon in adolescents.

Between 70 and 80% of people with stomach ulcers are infected with Helicobacter pylori. Approximately 90% of people with ulcers in the first part of the intestine (known as the duodenum) are infected with Helicobacter pylori.

Other studies show that stomach ulcers are more likely to develop in elderly people. This may be because arthritis is prevalent in the elderly, and alleviating arthritis pain can mean taking daily doses of aspirin or ibuprofen.

None of the research has shown that coxibs work better for arthritis than earlier cheaper medications; however, they have the advantage of producing fewer stomach ulcers.

Helicobacter pylori infection - if it causes inflammation of the stomach lining (gastritis), indigestion and stomach ulcers, it could double your risk of stomach cancer.

A bacterium, called Helicobacter pylori, is a frequent cause of stomach ulcers. It is believed that the shape and movement of the bacteria enables it to dig into the mucus lining of the stomach.

Stomach acid washes over stomach ulcers and causes a burning or gnawing pain in your abdomen. The pain may wake you at night. Ulcers in the small intestine can cause similar pain.

Later problems can occur with anything which can induce bleeding such as menstruation, trauma, surgery, or stomach ulcers. This is an inherited disease transmitted in an autosomal recessive pattern.
