Subcutaneous emphysema (SCE) refers to emphysema under the skin. It is existent in the subcutaneous skin layer. The condition may also sometimes be referred to as tissue emphysema.

Early complications associated with the surgical procedure and insertion of the tracheostomy tube include bleeding, infection, collapsed lung (pneumothorax), and leakage of air into the tissue of the chest or neck (subcutaneous emphysema).

While mediastinal or subcutaneous emphysema usually resolves spontaneously, pneumothorax may require specific treatment to remove the air and reinflate the lung.
