Sudden deafness is severe sensorineural hearing loss that develops within a few hours or is noticed on awakening. It affects about 1/5000 people each year.

 


Though there are more than 100 possible causes of sudden deafness, it is rare for a specific cause to be precisely identified. Only 10 to 15 percent of patients with SSHL know what caused their loss.

sudden deafness - loss of hearing that occurs quickly from such causes as explosion, a viral infection, or the use of some drugs.

Other potential candidates include adults with sudden deafness, people who have switched to dramatically different hearing aid signal processing schemes, and individuals who are beginning a new job or training program that is auditorally demanding.

Cogan's syndrome can lead to eye inflammation called interstitial keratitis (in-ter-STISH-al ker-ah-TI-tis). The syndrome also can cause hearing changes, including sudden deafness.
