Superficial Thrombophlebitis
Superficial thrombophlebitis is inflammation of a vein just under the skin, usually in the leg. A small blood clot also commonly forms in the vein, but is usually not serious.

Superficial Thrombophlebitis
The term “superficial thrombophlebitis' means a clot, with inflammation, occurring in a vein under the skin.

Superficial Thrombophlebitis
What is superficial thrombophlebitis?
Superficial thrombophlebitis (ST, or SVT) is a condition in which inflammation causes a blood clot to form in a vein near the surface of the body.

Superficial thrombophlebitis is treated with warm compresses applied to the affected limb, leg elevation at rest for periods of time, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), gradually increased ambulation, ...

Superficial thrombophlebitis usually resolves without treatment. Application of heat or anti-inflammatory drugs (aspirin or ibuprofen) can help relieve the pain.

In addition, if you develop small painful ulcers at the injection site, inform your health care professional immediately.

Superficial thrombophlebitis: The affected vein can be felt and feels harder than normal veins. It may appear as a reddish line under the skin, possibly accompanied by pain, localized swelling, and tender to the touch.

Symptoms of superficial thrombophlebitis include the following:
Swelling of the vein
Swelling, redness, and/or tightness of skin around the vein
Slight Fever
Burning or uncomfortable feeling around the vein ...

If you have superficial thrombophlebitis, your health care provider will usually recommend warm compresses and pain medication. Additional treatment depends on whether your physician thinks you may have an infection.

If the clot is in the veins just under the surface of the skin it's called a superficial thrombophlebitis. If it's in the deep venous system of the extremities, the diagnosis is a deep venous thrombosis or "DVT".

Varicose veins also can lead to a condition called superficial thrombophlebitis (THROM-bo-fleh-BI-tis). Thrombophlebitis is a blood clot in a vein.

Hot packs may be helpful for superficial thrombophlebitis but probably will not benefit deep vein thrombosis. Taking alternating hot and cold sitz baths or using alternating hot and cold compresses may help improve circulation in the affected area.

Your doctor may be able to diagnose superficial thrombophlebitis based on the discomfort you've experienced and by examining the affected vein near the surface of your skin.

What are the symptoms of chronic venous insufficiency?

Blood clots with inflammation in superficial veins (called superficial thrombophlebitis or phlebitis) rarely cause serious problems. But clots in deep veins (deep vein thrombosis) require immediate medical care.

The clot can either be close to the skin (superficial thrombophlebitis) or deep within a muscle (deep vein thrombosis). It may result from pooling of blood, venous wall injury, and altered blood coagulation.
