A condition called synkinesis may develop if the infection severely damages your facial nerve and the nerve grows back to the wrong place.

 


Some affected individuals have a condition called bimanual synkinesis, in which the movements of one hand are mirrored by the other hand.

Abnormal movements, such as tears when laughing or salivation at the wrong times (synkinesis)
Change in appearance of the face (disfigurement) from loss of movement
