A tension pneumothorax is a complete collapse of the lung. It occurs when air enters, but does not leave, the space around the lung (pleural space).

Causes, incidence, and risk factors: ...

Tension pneumothorax is caused by the buildup of pressure outside of the lung, compressing the mediastinum and limiting venous return and cardiac output.

Tension pneumothorax
This refers to a condition in which air builds up under pressure and usually totally collapses one or both of the lungs. This causes severe dysfunction of the cardiovascular system.

Tension pneumothorax
This is a rare complication. This causes shortness of breath that quickly becomes more and more severe. This occurs when the tear on the lung acts like a one-way valve.

Tension pneumothorax is a more serious condition in which the chest keeps filling with air and the air has no way to escape. It causes a very high pressure in the chest.

Tension pneumothorax occurs when excessive pressure builds up around the lung and forces it to collapse. This pressure can also affect the heart’s ability to pump blood. For this reason, tension pneumothorax is considered the most serious type.

Tension pneumothorax - air becomes trapped in the pleural space (the air between the lung and the chest wall), causing the lung to collapse.

A tension pneumothorax is an air leak between the lung and the chest cavity, causing a rapid increase of air within the cavity.

In tension pneumothorax, air accumulates inside the pleural space with each inspiration, causing excessive pressure to build up.

Because a tension pneumothorax can compress the walls of your heart as well as the unaffected lung, heart function may be impaired, leading to a potentially fatal drop in blood pressure.

Symptoms of a tension pneumothorax are similar and might also include:
Bluish color skin (because of a lack of oxygen)
Engorgement of the neck veins
Low blood pressure or shock ...

A tension pneumothorax is a medical emergency as air accumulates in the pleural space with each breath.

Tension Pneumothorax
Massive Myocardial Infarction (large heart attack)
Cardiac Tamponade (blood or fluid gets into the sac that holds the heart)
Hypoxia (low oxygen)
Massive Pulmonary Embolism (massive blood clot in the lungs) ...

TENSION PNEUMO: Short for tension pneumothorax. It is a collapsed lung where air escapes into the chest every time the patient breathes, as if through a one-way valve. A tension pneumo can cause pressure on the heart and is a serious emergency.

A more severe type of collapsed lung is called a tension pneumothorax. With a tension pneumothorax, air will begin to build up under pressure and can cause severe damage to the cardiovascular area.

Thus, air accumulates in the pleural space with each breath, compressing adjacent lung, and eventually compressing other structures in the chest, including the heart. This is called 'tension pneumothorax'.

As air builds up in the chest, it can push the heart toward the other side of the chest. This puts pressure on both the lung that hasn't collapsed and the heart. This condition is called tension pneumothorax. It is a medical emergency.

If a pneumothorax is very large and causes pressure to build up, it can interfere with the blood flow through your chest and cause a drop in blood pressure. This is called a tension pneumothorax.

In tension pneumothorax (where there is high intrapleural pressure), or if both lungs are collapsed, it is mandatory to remove the air from the pleural cavity immediately.
