What is tetanus?
Tetanus is a life-threatening bacterial infection. The bacteria usually get into the body through a cut or wound in the skin. The bacteria make a powerful poison that causes muscles to contract uncontrollably in spasms.

Tetanus is preventable through vaccination. In developed countries, children get their first tetanus vaccination a few weeks after birth. They then receive several booster vaccinations in childhood.

Tetanus. Tetanus is a disease that causes severe muscular contractions and convulsions. It is caused by a powerful toxin secreted by the bacterium Clostridium tetani. The bacterium is anaerobic, which means it lives without oxygen.
