Thoracic outlet syndrome is actually made up from a group of disorders that revolves around the nerves that run from the back of your neck down into your arms. This cluster of nerves is referred to as the brachial plexus.

Thoracic outlet syndrome is a rare condition.
Blood vessels and nerves coming from the spine or major blood vessels of the body pass through a narrow space near the shoulder and armpit on their way to the arms.

Thoracic outlet syndrome is caused by compressed nerves and blood vessels in the space under your collarbone and above your first rib (thoracic outlet). The compression may cause pain in your shoulder or neck and numbness in your arm or hand.

How is thoracic outlet syndrome diagnosed?
Your doctor will usually start by asking you questions about your symptoms and examining you.

Thoracic outlet syndrome can sometimes be diagnosed by a history and physical exam. In many cases, however, the symptoms are vague and difficult to track down. A chest x-ray may show an extra rib.

Thoracic outlet syndrome includes those disorders that result in compression of nerves or blood vessels supplying the arms.
