Depending on the results of the ECG, certain patients may be given drugs to break up the clot. It is best if these drugs are given within 3 hours of when the patient first felt the chest pain.

Thrombolytic therapy - In some cases, a clinician will recommend giving a medicine into a vein to dissolve the blood clot(s). This is called thrombolytic therapy.

Thrombolytic therapy may be given in those with DVT to dissolve the original clot and prevent pulmonary embolism. It does not prevent new clot formation and must be followed by oral anticoagulation therapy.
