Thyroid nodules that are not cancerous are treated by reducing the size of the nodule or treating it with radioactive iodine.

Thyroid nodules also can be visualized through radioactive imaging using a radioisotope (either radiolabeled iodine-123, 131-I, or 99Tcm pertechnetate) to determine the functional status of the nodule.

Most thyroid nodules are harmless. A nodule may simply be an overgrowth of normal thyroid tissue, a swelling caused by inflammation (such as in autoimmune thyroid diseases) or a collection of fluid called a cyst.

Fine-needle aspiration (FNA) of a thyroid nodule - When your doctor has found a thyroid nodule in your neck, this procedure is considered to be the most effective diagnostic test for thyroid cancer. It usually can be performed in your doctor's office.

Thyroid nodules are also common and are only rarely the result of the cancer. FNA is also very useful in deciding what the thyroid nodules are due to. Lymph node FNA is the third most common area.

It is an important diagnostic step to determine if a thyroid nodule is benign or malignant. A local anesthetic may be injected into the skin to numb the area before the biopsy.
