Ticks are small, insect-like creatures most often found in naturally vegetated areas. Ticks feed by attaching to animals and humans, sticking their mouthparts into the skin, and sucking blood for up to several days.

Tick-borne diseases can be prevented by preventing tick bites. In regions where tick exposure is likely, people should wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants cinched at the ankle or tucked into the boots or socks, and closed-toe shoes.

"Tick-borne diseases have the dubious distinction of being diseases you can catch while doing the things you like to do outdoors," says Dr. Nelson Moyer, principal microbiologist at the University of Iowa Hygienic Laboratory.
