Tick paralysis is a disease caused by the bite of a tick. When a tick feeds on a person or animal, a chemical in its saliva is released that inhibits the normal function of nerves and muscles.

Tick paralysis is the only tick-borne disease that is not caused by an infectious organism. The illness is caused by a neurotoxin produced in the tick's salivary gland.

Tick paralysis has been reported worldwide, but most human cases occur in North America and Australia. It develops 5-6 days after an adult female tick attaches. Over the next 24-48 hours, muscle weakness progresses to paralysis.

Tick paralysis is a rare problem that may occur after a tick bite. In some parts of the world, tick bites may cause other tick-borne diseases, such as South African tick-bite fever.
