These include Torulopsis, Cryptococcus, Malassezia, and Trichosporon yeasts. Diagnosis is by observation, and can be confirmed by culturing a stool or mucosa sample, or a scraping from the affected area.
Obsolete names for this genus include Mycotorula and Torulopsis. The species has also been known in the past as Monilia albicans and Oidium albicans.
Most infections are caused by C. albicans or C. tropicalis; however, C. glabrata (formerly Torulopsis glabrata) is increasingly involved in fungemia, UTIs, and, occasionally, pneumonia or other focal disease.
