What is a tracheoesophageal fistula?
A fistula (say 'fist-you-lah') is a connection between 2 of the body's tubes.

Esophageal atresia and tracheoesophageal fistula are disorders of the esophagus that may be inherited as an autosomal recessive genetic trait, or may result from developmental problems in a fetus.

Tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF)- Often occurs with esophageal atresia. It's an abnormal connection in one or more places between your child's esophagus and the trachea.

tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF) - condition that occurs when there is a gap between the upper and lower segments of the esophagus, and food and saliva cannot pass through.

Tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF) -a congenital (present at birth) connection between the trachea (windpipe) and esophagus (the tube that goes from the mouth to the stomach).

Tracheoesophageal fistula. This occurs when a tumor creates a hole between your esophagus and windpipe, leading to coughing and gagging when you swallow.

Tracheoesophageal fistula An abnormal passage between the esophagus and trachea. Leads to pneumonia. Corrected surgically. It is frequently associated with esophageal atresia.

tracheoesophageal fistula - caused by improper development of the baby's trachea (windpipe) and esophagus during pregnancy.

tracheoesophageal fistula - abnormal tract between trachea (windpipe) and esophagus (hollow tube used for swallowing)
tumors (abnormal growths)
chronic pneumonia or bronchitis ...

TEF = tracheoesophageal fistula; MIF = microimmunofluorescent.

Definition Tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF) is commonly a birth defect, with the trachea connected to the esophagus. In most cases, the esophagus is discontinuous, causing immediate feeding difficulties.

This condition is often associated with a tracheoesophageal fistula, an abnormality in which the lower esophagus connects to the trachea. The trachea is the tube that allows air to flow between the lungs and mouth.

Digestive disorders affecting infants and children range from simple problems that most children experience, such as vomiting or diarrhea, to more serious problems such as the birth defect tracheoesophageal fistula or illnesses such as appendicitis.

Some people with this condition are born with a blocked esophagus (esophageal atresia), which is often accompanied by an abnormal connection between the esophagus and the trachea (tracheoesophageal fistula).
