Transient global amnesia is disturbed memory typically caused by vascular or ischemic lesions in the brain. Diagnosis is primarily clinical but includes laboratory tests and CT, MRI, or both to evaluate central circulation.

In transient global amnesia, there is a sudden onset of severe amnesia that lasts for several hours before resolution. Afterwards the person is unable to recall events during the period of amnesia.

It is very important to distinguish an epileptic seizure from nonepileptic events such as syncope, transient ischemic attack, migraine, movement disorders, paroxysmal vertigo, transient global amnesia, sleep disorders, and psychiatric disorders.

Amnesia can be caused by damage to areas of the brain that are vital for memory processing. Unlike a temporary episode of memory loss (transient global amnesia), amnestic syndrome can be permanent.

Illness that results in the loss of nerve cells (neurodegenerative illness)
Nutritional problems (vitamin deficiencies such as low vitamin B12)
Seizures
