Causes ...

Aidan has transient tic disorder, a temporary condition that affects up to 25% of people before the age of 18. Sometimes a person will have one kind of tic — like a shoulder shrug — that lasts for a while and then goes away.

Short-lived tics (transient tic disorder) are common in childhood.
Certain medications, such as methylphenidate (used to treat hyperactivity in children), were previously thought to cause tics in children already prone to the disorder.

Nearly 10 percent of school-aged children experience transient tic disorder—the most common type of tic disorder, with symptoms lasting at least 4 months, but no longer than one year.

Transient tic disorder includes motor and/or vocal tics lasting for at least 4 weeks but for no longer than 12 consecutive months. Chronic motor or vocal tic disorder must have duration over 12 months.

When tics occur over a period of less than six months, their presence may be referred to as a transient tic disorder. A chronic tic disorder is one in which only motor tics are present and the course is longer than six months.

About 1 to 2% of the population has chronic motor tic disorder. The condition is more common than Tourette syndrome. However, it is not as common as transient tic disorder.
All types of chronic tics are believed to be forms of Tourette syndrome.
