transillumination - a method of examination by the passage of light through tissues to assist in diagnosis. The light transmission changes with different tissues.

Transillumination, or shining a light through the cyst, can show that the growth is fluid filled.
If the mass grows quickly, or you have night pain, severe pain, or fever, you will need more tests to make sure you do not have other types of tumors.

Transillumination (the passage of a strong light through a body structure to permit inspection on the opposite side) of the scrotum can differentiate a hernia from a hydrocele.

Tests: A light can be held behind the scrotum (transillumination) to differentiate between a tense hydrocele and a tumor of the testis. The light can be seen easily in the presence of a hydrocele but cannot be seen if the mass is solid (e.g.

Routine evaluation of iris melanomas includes gonioscopy, transillumination of the globe, and indirect ophthalmoscopy with 360° of scleral depression. Photographic documentation is essential to document progression in size or growth of the tumor.

A light shined through the scrotum will cause the hydrocoele to illuminate (transillumination).
Investigation is not usually required in children.
For adults, an ultrasound of the testis may be required.

Because the fluid in a hydrocele usually is clear, your doctor may shine a light through the scrotum (transillumination). With a hydrocele, the light will outline the testicle, indicating that clear fluid surrounds it.

Light can be shined through a spermatocele (transillumination), indicating that the mass is not a solid tumor but more likely a benign cyst.

A ganglion can usually be diagnosed by its appearance and location. Your doctor will also feel the bump and shine a light alongside it. If the bump is a ganglion, the light usually shines through it (transillumination).
