Gestational trophoblastic tumors start inside the uterus, the hollow, muscular, pear-shaped organ where a baby grows. This type of cancer occurs in women during the years when they are able to have children.

gestational trophoblastic tumor A rare cancer in women of childbearing age in which cancer cells grow in the tissues that are formed in the uterus after conception.

Placental Site Trophoblastic Tumor (PSTT). These tumors are very rare tumors. They consist of a type of trophoblastic cell in the placenta called intermediate trophoblastic cells. These do not produce a lot of hCG.

Choriocarcinoma is one of the two types of gestational trophoblastic tumor, the other being hydatidiform mole. Choriocarcinoma may follow any type of pregnancy. It is especially likely to occur with a hydatidiform mole (molar pregnancy).
