Celiac disease (Nontropical sprue) -- Congenital disorder caused by an intolerance for gluten, a protein present in most grains. Gluten triggers an allergic reaction in the small intestine, which prevents the intestine from absorbing nutrients.

Tropical sprue occurs in central and northern South America, Asia, Africa, and other specific locations. No cause has been identified, but suggested causes include infection, parasitic infestation, vitamin deficiency, and food toxin.

Celiac disease (also called non-tropical sprue, celiac sprue and gluten-sensitive enteropathy) is an intestinal disorder in which the body cannot tolerate gluten, a natural protein commonly found in many grains, including wheat, barley, rye and oats.

Other names for celiac disease include sprue, nontropical sprue, gluten enteropathy, and adult celiac disease. (Tropical sprue is another disease of the small intestine that occurs in tropical climates.

Also known as celiac sprue, nontropical sprue and gluten-sensitive enteropathy, celiac disease occurs in people who have a susceptibility to gluten intolerance.

Celiac (SEE-lee-ak) disease is also known as Celiac Sprue, or Non-Tropical Sprue. Celiac disease damages your small intestines so that they cannot break down and absorb food normally. Celiac sprue can develop at any age.
