African trypanosomiasis is a systemic protozoal disease and a type of trypanosomiasis. There are two subtypes that are named depending on the region of Africa in which they are found (East or West).

African Trypanosomiasis, also known as "sleeping sickness," is caused by microscopic parasites of the species Trypanosoma brucei. It is transmitted by the tsetse fly (Glossina species), which is found only in rural Africa.

American trypanosomiasis (Chagas disease) is distinguished from African trypanosomiasis (sleeping sickness) by the part of the world where they occur, their vectors, their different symptoms and different treatments (see Table 1).
