An umbilical hernia is a hole in the muscles around the bellybutton through which the intestines slip. The operation will repair the hole. It will take about 60 minutes.

You may want to have a say in this decision, or you may simply want to follow your doctor's recommendation.

Umbilical hernias are common in infants. They occur slightly more often in African Americans. Most umbilical hernias are not related to disease.

Umbilical hernia:
By 1 year of age, many umbilical hernias will have closed on their own without needing surgery. Nearly all umbilical hernias will have closed without surgery by age 5.
Placing a coin or strap over the hernia will not fix it.

Umbilical hernia A protrusion of part of the intestine through a defect in the abdominal wall around the belly button, usually manifested as a small bulge. Usually not serious and requiring no medical treatment.

Umbilical Hernias

Umbilical hernias can vary in size. They are rarely bigger than about 1 in. (2.5 cm) across. Most children don't feel pain from the hernia.

Umbilical hernias may need no treatment and often improve with time as the muscles of the abdomen develop. If they persist after the age of five, you may want to review the problem.

Umbilical hernias, as the name implies, occur around the navel. The herniated tissues are returned to the abdomen, and the adjacent muscle is pulled together over the incision for reinforcement.

Most umbilical hernias do not need repairing. Smaller hernias are usually repaired by an operation which simply closes the defect with stitches. However, umbilical and parumbilical hernias over 2 cm in length are usually repaired by using a mesh.

Congenital umbilical hernias rarely strangulate and are not treated; most resolve spontaneously within several years. Very large defects may be repaired electively after age 2 yr.

Umbilical hernias occur directly beneath or near the navel. Hernias that occur where a surgery has taken place are called incisional hernias.
