Pleurodynia is thought to be a viral illness in which either the muscles between the ribs or the nerves located in that region become inflamed, causing sharp pain and tenderness made worse by moving, breathing, coughing, or sneezing.

Bornholm disease or pleurodynia is a disease caused by the Coxsackie virus. It is named after the Danish island Bornholm where the first documented cases occurred.

The most common virus causing Bornholm disease is an enterovirus called Coxsackie B. Bornholm disease is also called epidemic myalgia and pleurodynia (because of inflammation of the lining tissue of the lungs).

Because pleurodynia is a viral infection, it does not respond to antibiotic treatment. However, most people with pleurodynia recover on their own without complications.

Type B viruses cause epidemic pleurodynia (fever, lung, and abdominal pain with headache that lasts about two to 12 days and resolves). Pleurodynia is also termed Bornholm disease.

Bornholm disease (also known as pleurodynia, devil's grip, epidemic myalgia) causes attacks of severe pain in the lower chest which makes it very difficult to breathe.

Immune disorders such as lupus and rheumatic fever tend to have recurrent pleurisy, with or without effusion. Epidemic pleurodynia, a pleurisy attributed to a virus, is a mild disease of short duration.

Posteriorly there may be heard tubular breathing with aegophony. These various physical signs render it impossible to mistake the disease for other maladies the symptoms of which may bear a resemblance to it, such as pleurodynia.
