Venous insufficiency is a very common condition resulting from decreased blood flow from the leg veins up to the heart, with pooling of blood in the veins.
Chronic venous insufficiency occurs when the leg veins do not allow blood to travel back to the heart. (Arteries carry blood away from the heart, while veins carry blood to the heart).
Chronic venous insufficiency is different from the problem of varicose veins. Varicose veins are enlarged, sometimes painful veins in the legs, but they usually do not have the fluid leakage that leads to CVI.
