Labyrinthitis or vestibular neuronitis is a presumed viral infection of the vestibular nerve. It causes sudden loss of function in the balance system of one ear. The brain normally compares the two ears.

Signs and symptoms of inflammation of the inner ear (acute vestibular neuronitis or labyrinthitis) include sudden, intense vertigo that may persist for several days, with nausea and vomiting.
