What is viral meningitis?
Viral meningitis is a viral infection of the brain and spinal cord. The membranes that cover the brain and spinal cord, which are called the meninges, become inflamed and infected.

Viral meningitis - there are several viruses that can cause viral meningitis, which is not treatable with antibiotics. It is a seasonal illness, with most cases occurring during the summer and early fall.

Viral meningitis
Viral meningitis is the most common and less serious type of meningitis. It is difficult to estimate the number of cases of viral meningitis because the symptoms are often so mild that they are mistaken for flu.

Viral meningitis can occur suddenly (acute) or develop slowly over a two-week period or longer (chronic).

Viruses cause a greater number of cases of meningitis each year than do bacteria. Viral meningitis is usually mild and often clears on its own in 10 days or less.

Viral meningitis tends to appear in summer months and is generally much less severe. Most people recover fully. Initially, vague flu-like symptoms occur with fever and muscle aches.

Viral meningitis is milder and occurs more often than bacterial meningitis. It usually develops in the late summer and early fall, and often affects children and adults under age 30. Most infections occur in children under the age of 5.

Viral meningitis is sometimes called aseptic meningitis to indicate it is not the result of bacterial infection and cannot be treated with antibiotics.

Viral meningitis cannot be treated with antibiotics, which are only effective against bacteria. For a mild case of viral meningitis, the best treatment is usually extra fluids, rest in a darkened room, and medication for pain and fever.

One complication is viral meningitis. Symptoms of viral meningitis include headache, stiff neck, and fever. People with viral meningitis sometimes need to be hospitalized.

The major risk from viral meningitis is permanent brain damage. Children aged one year or less and adults aged 55 years and over are more vulnerable to life threatening complications.

Antiviral medications are administered in the case of viral meningitis, and antifungal medications are available as well.
