Visceral larva migrans is caused by worms (parasites) that infect the intestines of dogs and cats. The dog parasite is called Toxocara canis and the cat parasite is called Toxocara cati.

Visceral larva migrans develops when large numbers of parasites spread through different organs of the body, such as the lungs, liver and heart.

Visceral larva migrans (VLM): This syndrome consists of fever, anorexia, hepatosplenomegaly, rash, pneumonitis, and asthmatic symptoms, depending on the affected organs.

History of pica suggests toxoplasmosis or toxocariasis(visceral larva migrans).
History of tick exposure suggests RockyMountain spotted fever, relapsing fever, or Lyme disease.

When common parasites of dogs and cats infect humans, the illness is called toxocariasis (or visceral larva migrans). Toxocariasis usually affects kids under age 10.
